What is Palliative Care:

Palliative care aims at enabling people to live with the disease, as free of symptoms and psychosocial problems as possible.

The focus of treatment shifts from cure to care – to improve quality of life.

It is based on a philosophy of care that   -

*      Affirms life

*      Recognizes dying as a normal process and neither hastens or postpones life.

*      Empowers families to care for the patient, by training them in basic nursing chores and emotional support.

*      Helps patients and families prepare for living with the disease, and when necessary, for death.

What does palliative care provide?

Palliative care focuses on a person’s well being, by providing –

Physical care, through management of

*      Pain

*      Breathlessness

*      Wounds

*      Difficulty in swallowing

*      Constipation or diarrhoea

*      Nausea and vomiting.

*      Other symptoms.

Emotional support,  that may involve

*      Listening

*      Looking for hidden anxieties or depression and relieving them

*      A relationship based on trust

*      ‘Being there’ and spending time

Social support, to prevent

*      Social isolation

*      Family conflicts

*      Social stigma

*      Conspiracy of silence in the family.

Spiritual care, to the patient can

*      Make peace with the reality of the illness.

*      Use their energy positively in the time they have left.

What diseases does palliative care cover?
